Most notable site by Amy Lynn: Survived Katrina
Survived Katrina was a dual-site that was started on the brink of the aftermath of the 2005 Katrina hurricane as a forum and by the next day , it was a separate registered domain. The goal of Survived Katrina was to reconnect victims and families. The end result was a huge outpouring of “virtual volunteers”, organized and recruited solely by Amy Lynn, who personally helped hundreds and hundreds of families reconnect, find shelter and goods, and offer support for the families searching for loved ones. Survived Katrina was featured on CNN.com, MSNBC, as well as many, many other notable sites and also resulted in many interviews, most prominent being Salon.com.
(“Connected Giving” – 2005 article Salon.com)…Gurwitz herself searched Craigslist to make contact with a group in need before rallying her donors; the most cyber-savvy volunteers are creating blogs and Web sites designed to gather donation specifics into one place, or even to match donors to needs. Amy Lynn Cook, 25, of Raleigh, N.C., a stay-at-home mom of two and freelance Web designer, initially created SurvivedKatrina.net as an information hub for survivors; she recruited volunteers on Craigslist to help her run the site. Now, one of the most active parts of the site is the forum for information about donating goods from tarpaulins to plus-size clothing to school supplies.
Survived Katrina received over 3,000 page views per hour in its peak and was one of the central sites for helping victims and their families. Amy Lynn describes Survived Katrina as “the most humbling project” the she has ever completed.
