First, lets take a look at what the term “think outside the box” means.

  • Charles H. Duell, Director of the US Patent Office, said, “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” – That was in 1899. Location = BOX.
  • The BOX = constrained and unimaginative thinking.

Are you in the box or out?
Pop quiz: A man walks into a bar and asks the barman for a glass of water. The barman pulls out a gun and points it at the man. The man says ‘Thank you’ and walks out. Explain.

Answer. Highlight here : The man had hiccups. The barman recognized this from his speech and drew the gun in order to give him a shock. It worked and cured the hiccups – so the man no longer needed the water.

So how does this all fit into saving money?! You’re still in the box…

There are so many ways to save money on everything you pay for. And because there are just so many ways, I’ll just share my most recent favorite.

I wanted a fancy sitting area outdoors. Fancy things are expensive and for that matter, even things that are average, they are expensive too. But what can you do, right? Fancy slabs of gorgeous materials aren’t going to just magically appear. Right? No….? You are still in the BOX! While no fancy materials “magically appeared”, I did get some fancy materials. For FREE. How? I called my local granite company and found that if I went to them, brought work gloves and signed a wavier, I could get all the FREE granite slabs I wanted. Simple Enough.

Whoa!! Back up? What??? OK. Let me break it down for you. Say, you are a granite company, and you make custom counter tops or whatnot. At the end of the day, you have a bunch of pieces left over from the customization. Those pieces are going to the dumpster, then to the landfill. Your company gets charged, per pound, for the granite waste and you receive two thumbs down from anyone remotely ‘green’. So you get this idea, you will give granite away for FREE and solve two problems at once. And you get FREE advertising (the great mind behind this concept is WAY out of the box).

That’s where people like us come in. We take the granite and recycle it. Win-Win.

Remember, there is always more then one solution. BOX = BAD.

Unless you are a cat, then no outside the box!! ;)
