Tip #2: Don’t Panic, use the R’s

Picture it, panic state, 2009…. Your stove just died and you can’t live without one. You need to buy a new one TODAY. Of course nothing is on sale, last week the stoves were 15% off…

What are you going to do? Buy the stove at FULL STICKER PRICE? *screams*

STOP. When you start getting anxious because something needs to be replaced immediately, follow the simple, WebFloss No Panic Buying Guide using the R’s.

There are a few steps to this plan that can save you hundreds of dollars. We will use the stove at Best Buy for our example.

  • Research – Search WebFloss or Google for current Best Buy %off coupons that are printable.
  • Read – Find the model you want, read reviews and then narrow it down to a select few that Best Buy carries.
  • Rewards – Make sure you have the Best Buy Reward Zone card or check to see if the store you want to purchase from has a program like that (it’s free, earn points, get cash coupons…)
  • Review – Best Buy, and other retailers have price match policies, meaning they will honor sales at other stores – review the policy. Best Buy’s policy is basically, if you find it cheaper elsewhere, Best Buy will match the price AND give 10% off. If there are no price matching deals available, ALWAYS try to negotiate the price. Ask for the manager, don’t act desperate, and if you want, just flat out ask, “Is this the best price you can do for me?” – OR use one of the classic lines:

  • “Hmmm, it’s pretty nice, but it doesn’t have (insertfeature) like this other one, I’d buy this one today if this stove was just a tad less expensive.”
  • “I really love this stove, but it’s a little more then I wanted to spend, is there a certain time stoves go on sale here?”
  • “They have this same stove on sale at (insertstorebehonest), I was going to get this today and also pick up some other things…”

  • Repackaged – Stores have floor models and repackaged models, that are often on sale. There is nothing wrong with them at all. Some may have a scratch or small dent, some may just be an older model. Best Buy usually carries these in the far end of the appliance section. Each store has there own area that they keep those models in. Find this area and check it, then negotiate the lowered price even more. Don’t be scared of sounding cheap. It’s your money..

  • Rebates – Do a quick search to see if any of the models you want to buy has a rebate at Best Buy or through the manufacturer, not all stores keep track!!. Keep the rebate amount in your head for each model and take that off the price tag while shopping. Even though you are paying X amount now, you will be getting X amount back. You can also get a rebate on the open box models!! (always read the terms of the rebate to make sure) Reminder, never mention an unadvertised rebate while negotiating…
  • Regroup – Gather all your information, make a plan, and hit the store relaxed.

Research, Read, Rewards, Review, Repacked, Rebates and Regroup. Panic gone.

Being an informed shopper is the only way to shop. And if you haven’t been in the past, it’s ok, you have to start sometime!
