According to the Associated Press: Salvage Grocers are doing pretty dang well.
With prices well below 50% off, salvage grocery stores are a great way to save a significant amount of money on your groceries. If… you can put up with some dents a some items rapidly approaching the “sell by date”.
There has been debates recently on “sell by dates” which I posted about back in July.
I am still on the fence on whether I would purchase items past their “sell by date” regardless of the cost.
Dented cans I can deal with, although stacking them in the pantry can prove to be a tad tedious…Might be better to get a milk crate and chuck them all in there.
I can’t do the “mystery” cans that some of these stores carry. I really believe that they rip off all the labels to the: pumpkin spice, evaporated milk, and lima beans and just throw them in the mystery bin.
All and all you’ll find some great deals at salvage stores and if you don’t live near one, remember to check out your local grocers clearance section which is usually located in the way back of the store near the bathrooms for some reason…

I had never heard of salvage grocers before. Isn’t this the type of food that used to be given free to food banks and homeless shelters? If that’s the case, then there’s definitely a down-side.
That’s a very good point, although, you could buy them and donate them I suppose.
